Arch London ~ The Perfect Afternoon Tea!

Arch London Afternoon Tea - Champagne & Strwberry Eclair!

Arch London Afternoon Tea - Champagne & Strawberry Eclair!

Many visitors from overseas still imagine that we are a nation where at half past three, everything stops for tea!

Sadly these days Afternoon Tea is usually only an occasional luxury for us mere mortals, a Sunday treat in a country house hotel, or a welcome break from a hectic days shopping “in the city”. More’s the pity I say, especially when you find a place that has the perfect excuse to indulge in this tradition whether it is a special occasion or not. The place is The Arch Hotel located in the fashionable area between Marylebone and Mayfair in a converted row of Georgian Houses.

We decided to take our afternoon tea in the drawing room; it was cold and wet outside and the lure of this beautifully appointed room with its soft furnishings, carefully chosen books and accents and flickering fire was the perfect backdrop to this fine English tradition.

The menu was cleverly thought out and offered a tempting array of treats to tempt your palate and your waist line! Gone were the scones, clotted cream and preserve (not that these aren’t normally welcome) and in their place were alternatives such as hot buttered crumpets with blueberry butter, sour dough toast with gentlemen’s relish and a very creative array of home baked éclairs. The éclairs deserve a review all of their own, these were beautifully thought out with a real attention to textures and flavours and were worthy of the finest French patisserie. Combinations such as crab and crème fraiche and foie gras and sauternes were alongside the sweeter choices such as green tea & chocolate, Veuve Cliquot and wild strawberry (see pic) and white chocolate and violet. The pastry was light and melted in your mouth and the marriage of flavours was inspired and was such a refreshing change from the normal tartlets and fancies that we have come to expect from an afternoon tea menu.

The selection of perfectly served ‘Jing’ Teas to accompany these fine treats ranges from the classic English breakfast tea to the finest silver needle white tea, ensuring whether is it simple refreshment, or a pick me up you are looking for, the menu has something to fit the bill.

Whilst we are talking bills – the prices for this premium way to while away an afternoon are far from it, the full monty complete with “a flight” of the all important éclairs, toast and gentleman’s relish and chilled glass of Champagne is £24.00 per person. Smaller options such as toasted muffins with blueberry butter are £4.50 per person.
So next time you are city weary or just fancy an excuse for a spot of English tradition with a welcome twist, head to The Arch for an hour, or two, or three…Read the full overnight review HERE
