Review of Peepo Pizza, Bridgnorth

Peepo in Bridgnorth is a pleasant surprise, tucked under St Mary’s Gate at the end of the High Street, it’s certainly a little more than a pizza restaurant.

It’s exterior is lit up beautifully, and it looks so warm and inviting I can’t wait to go in. Although the exterior is very modern it seems to blend in well with the surrounding architecture.

Once inside there’s a short wait for the table as it it’s very busy we so seize the opportunity to pop upstairs and have a quick look at the cocktail bar. The bar itself has a lovely atmosphere and with exposed oak beams and candles on the tables. Obviously it would be rude not to treat myself to a little Peepo Bellini (£4.95) – fresh raspberry, vodka, sugar syrup and prosecco.

We head back down and study the menu which is fairly extensive with a choice of delicious salads, pastas, pizzas and some very tempting side orders.

Grissini Proscuitto

Grissini Proscuitto

I ordered the Grissini Proscuitto (£4.95) – bread sticks wrapped with Proscuitto, Parmesan and rocket with a balsamic glaze. Then it was a toss up between the salt and pepper squid with garlic mayo and lemon, served with a sweet chilli sauce, and creamy garlic mushrooms with white wine, garlic, thyme and mascarpone sauce served on toasted crostini – the squid won.

Chorizo, broccoli and chilli pasta

Chorizo, broccoli and chilli pasta

I couldn’t resist the chorizo, broccoli and chilli conchiglie (£9.95) – pasta shells with diced chorizo, baby florets. We also ordered a mucho meat pizza (£13.95) – pepporoni, pork and beef meatballs, pesto chicken and ham, tomato sauce with fresh chilli. We also had to try the chilli and rosemary salt chips with garlic mayonnaise and tomato salsa. I had a feeling I was in for a treat.

Salt and Pepper Squid

The antipasti arrived, both were beautifuly presented and full of flavour. The Grissini was delicious, without being too filling – perfect for a starter, and the generous portion of squid, was tender and lightly battered, garlic mayo and sweet chilli provided an ideal accompaniment.

No sooner had we finished than the friendly staff were on hand to replace them with our main course. My pasta was fantastic – so fresh, the crispy broccoli florets and spicy chorizo and chilli, drizzled with olive oil, makes for a simple yet effective dish with a real flavour of Italy, no overly rich sauces simply good quality fresh ingredients.

All of the pizzas, with their fresh homemade dough base, can be ordered calzone style. We had opted for the traditional flat version. I am not a fan of a lot of ingredients, preferring simple combinations of flavours, so I would never normally choose a dish with so many toppings, however this pizza is truly great! Not overloaded with great quantities so each of the flavours work well together and complement each other. Perfectly cooked with a crispy base and melting mozzarella top this is prince among pizzas.

It was at this point a realised we had also been rather greedy and ordered chips, which had unfortunately not arrived. By the time I had remined the manager I’d already realised I’d gone a step too far and was probably only going to be able to manage one or two.
I wasn’t as impressed with the chips as the rest of the meal but that certainly woudln’t stop me going back to this lovely little Italian – in fact the sooner the better!

We had no room at all for a pudding, there’s not an extensive selection but there is a good choice. With cholcolate truffle pizza, lemon cheescake, brownies and gelato on the bill we may have to return for coffee one Saturday afternoon.

I did however find enough room to pop back upstairs to the bar for another Peepo Bellini to finish off a really enjoyable meal that was complemeted by good staff and a nice atmospehere.

Peepo is the ideal place to go with friends or family and they are planning live music gigs on a Friday night – see their website and facebook page for more information.
