Revellers enjoy some tasty Ragley Bangers and Purity Ale

At the offices of ETM we often get sent some tasty morsels to try by the regions producer’s – so it is only fair we begin to share some of our opinions with you are hungry public – please note, these are just OUR opinions, and you may share a different taste – if you do, feel free to comment or send us your own taste reviews!

Beer and sausages are pure heaven

Midlands brewers Purity don’t make a huge range of beers, they appear to prefer to concentrate on quality rather than quantity, however when they suggested we did a review of their popular UBU Ale and also sent a pack of sausages within the refrigerated parcel, it raised an eyebrow at the Eat The Midlands office.

We are all used to drinks manufacturers teaming up with food producers and lending their name, tenuously in most circumstances, as a ‘key ingredient’ to a product, but as l found out to my pleasure, the hand linked sausages created at Ragley Estate Meats certainly offered a UBU flavour.

UBU is a  4.5% ABV and is a distinctive premium amber coloured beer using 100% English Maris Otter Malt with Challenger and Cascade hops that creates a balanced and full flavoured drink. From the moment you open the distinctive bottle the ingredients pour out with a smooth head and an aromatic and strong scent of hops also greets you. UBU also has a hint of toffee/caramel with a touch of nuttiness whilst the fruity clean and refreshing flavours lend the ale to be a favourite Summer sup and surprisingly good for a bottled ale.

The Purity brewing company boast they only use natural ingredients which makes drinking alcoholic drinks seem to me to be a lot more pleasurable and possibly healthy and whilst despite the standard warnings printed on the bottles to drink responsibly l fear a few long Sunday afternoon sessions will be on the agenda with my new friend UBU.

Now then, back to the sausages. I tasted these under the grill after l enjoyed the bottled beer and was impressed how tasty they actually were. They held their shape and offered a full flavour oozing with taste

UBU ale was chosen as a central ingredient for the sausages because of its distinctive taste and the sausages made out of rare breed pork and caramelised onions certainly hit the spot. The meat is filled into natural skins ensuring a delightful speciality sausage.

Purity and Ragley Estate Meats are two Warwickshire producers that share a passion for supplying customers with the very best locally produced products and l for one will be making recommendations to my local real ale pub to stock the beer, whilst i’ll be placing an order for the sausages to pop on the barbeque for those sunny Sunday afternoons which will help to soak up the pleasure of the consumed ale!

A bit about Ragley Meats: (a bit from the producers)

The new Ragley Pork and Pure UBU sausages, which are being sold in support of the Help for Heroes charity, proved to be a big hit with visitors to the Alcester and Forest of Arden Food Festival on Saturday (24th April).

The hand-linked sausages, created by Ragley Estate Meats, sold out within a couple of hours of being officially launched and a second batch had to be brought in to re-stock the stand.

The sausages are a combination of Ragley rare breed pork with caramelised onions and Pure UBU ale, made by Warwickshire brewer Purity Brewing Co. The meat is filled into natural skins ensuring a premium speciality sausage. The award-winning Pure UBU was chosen as a central ingredient because it is a distinctive premium amber coloured beer, brewed using 100% English Maris Otter Malt with Challenger and Cascade hops.

Ten per cent from the proceeds of sausage sales will be donated to Help for Heroes, which raises money to support wounded servicemen and women in the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

In recognition for this support, soldiers J.S Matthew Bonsall, J.S James Watkiss and Sgt Adrian Bonsall, Royal Signals ACF, joined Jim Minkin, from Purity, and Lord Hertford, whose family own Ragley Hall, for the launch.

Vanda Cookes, from Ragley Estate Meats, said: “We’re delighted with how well the sausages were received by festival visitors. We knew they would be popular but never imagined we’d sell out so quickly.”

“Our chefs and butchers worked very hard experimenting with different ingredients to get the taste, smell and texture of the sausages just right. Our meat is locally sourced, which was recently recognised when we won the Champion of Local Produce – Retailer category at the Coventry & Warwickshire Food & Drink Awards 2009.”
