Amateur Cook Turned TV Chef Lands top Role Shropshire Restaurant Kitchen

An aspiring Shrewsbury chef who made his name on the TV programme “The Taste” has fulfilled his long-held ambition – transforming his pastime into a profession.

Keen amateur cook James Sherwin appeared on the Channel 4 show earlier this year, impressing star judge Nigella Lawson with his skills. He has now made a similar impression at leading Shrewsbury restaurant Henry Tudor House, situated just off Wyle Cop, where he has been refining his craft.

“We initially took James on to help in our kitchen for one day a week and have been very excited by his enthusiasm, expertise and ideas – so much so that he is now a permanent member of our team here,” said Graham Jenkins, proprietor of Henry Tudor House, which features a restaurant, function room and brasserie with 200 covers.

James has been given a full time job, working alongside the venue’s executive chef Chris Conde. “Being on The Taste and meeting all those people really showed me that I wanted to work with food and was the catalyst for me being here now,” said former nurse James, who is 35. “I initially reached out to Chris because in my opinion he is the finest chef in Shropshire and I wanted to work with the best.
“To be given a job at Henry Tudor House is an honour and means I have fulfilled my dream – I’ll be cooking and learning every day with a fantastic head chef and great team.”

James will be appearing at the Shrewsbury Fringe Food Festival (june 28th & 29th), held within the Market Hall, and will be demonstrating his skills – as will Chef Chris Conde during the weekend. More on Shrewsbury Fringe food Festival here

As part of his career development, James will also be spending two weeks on an internment at Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons in July, under acclaimed proprietor Raymond Blanc at his two Michelin starred hotel restaurant in the Cotswolds – a training ground for some of the UK’s finest chefs.
