Antonio Carluccios Launch in Shrewsbury

Antonio Carluccio in Shrewsbury

Antonio Carluccio in Shrewsbury with CEO Simon Kossoff.

Carluccio’s opened this week in Shrewsbury to much acclaim from the locals – its first site in the county of Shropshire – welcoming local residents and visitors for a genuine Italian dining and shopping experience.

Housed in a beautiful Grade II listed building and centrally-located in The Square, Carluccio’s will offer an all-day Italian restaurant, with walls lined with beautifully packaged artisanal Italian food products, many sourced directly from Italy, to peruse and purchase. Mixing contemporary design with charming nods to modern Italy, Carluccio’s is the ideal destination for an Italian coffee and hearty breakfast, right through to an aperitivo at the bar, three-course candlelit supper, or a family feast. The restaurant has seating for 90 people and provides the perfect setting for special celebrations and events.

Antonio Carluccio, the 79 year old creator of the brand who made a rare attendance at the invite only launch commented ““I am delighted to have been able to open a restaurant here. The Square here is the ideal place for people to enjoy a coffee, sit and watch the world go by in a traditional English town.” – this is the 77th venue for the brand in the Uk, which has expanded world wide since it was sold by Chef Antonio for reportedly £90m back in 2007.

Continuing with his passions for the finest ingredients, many sourced directly from Italy; the varied restaurant menu provides something for everyone, with dishes prepared on site daily by Carluccio’s chefs. First courses include appetising soups, crisp Italian salads and, designed for sharing, a selection of antipasti plates laden with traditional specialities such as Parma ham, buffalo mozzarella, homemade focaccia, caponata, rustica olives and juicy artichokes.

There are over 11 pasta dishes on the menu – must tries include a delicious Ravioli (homemade delicate ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta, served in the traditional way with butter and sage) and Carluccio’s signature dish of Penne Giardiniera (Pugliese penne with courgette, chilli and deep fried spinach balls with Italian cheese and garlic). Can’t choose? Try the popular Trio di Pasta (a tasting trios of pasta dishes) – the Tortelloni di Cervo (fresh tortelloni filled with wine braised venison), Pasta con Funghi (pappardelle with a mix of wild mushrooms) and Penne alla Luganica (tubes of pasta with a rich and spicy Italian sausage sauce) go particularly well together. Other mains include Branzino e Basilico (pan fried sea bass fillets on crushed basil and sundried tomato potatoes with black olives); Cotoletta di Vitello (UK rose veal in herb and parmesan breadcrumbs, simply served with lemon) and Pollo e Prugne (poached chicken salad with roasted hazelnuts, prunes, green beans and mixed leaves with balsamic dressing).

Home-style desserts prepared by hand every day include an indulgent Tiramisù ai Frutti di Bosco (a summertime version of the classic – mascarpone cream with light sponge, mixed berries and raspberry coulis) and Crostata di Fragole (fresh strawberry and mascarpone tart served with vanilla ice cream). And of course, there’s Carluccio’s own authentic Gelati Artigianali ice cream.

Plus, until the end of summer, Carluccio’s picnic hampers can be picked up in store so you can enjoy the flavours of Italy al fresco in your favourite patch of green. Each picnic hamper is priced at £45, serves two, is generously packed full of wholesome and nourishing regional Italian dishes, freshly made on the day and presented in a smart, reusable cool-bag. There is even an option for the bambini too, priced at £10 each, so you can enjoy hassle free time with the family in the great outdoors.

James Day, Editor of Eat-the-Midlands.co.uk (pictured) who was invited to the event added “Shropshire has always been renowned for producers and increasingly Chefs, but Shrewsbury in recent years has come on in leaps and bounds, offering a diverse range of independent eateries and now the brands are following suit to offer a wide range for visitors to choose from.”
