Shropshire Catering Businesses Take on The UK

Two Shropshire based hospitality catering businesses this week took on some of the best caterers in the UK, and gave them a run for their money – with more to follow.

Much loved and acclaimed Chef Suree Coates from The King and Thai Restaurant Broseley recently made it to the semi finals of prestigious Cheffing competition ‘Chef of The Year’ organised by the British Culinary Federation, (BCF) who focus on raising the standards of UK chefs across the board, and support international competitions as well as the English National Culinary Team.

Sponsored by Catering Centre UK who are based in Stafford Park, Telford, and specialise in catering supplies for hire and sales, as well as hospitality consultancy, they made a great team – Catering Centre UK were themselves last week named as one of the finalists of the Shropshire Star’s Excellence in Business Awards 2014 ‘Small Business of The Year’

Richard Davies MD (pictured with Chef Suree Coates) commented “being a Small business ourselves we like to support other such businesses through our knowledge, experience and supplies. Chef Suree is a real ambassador of Shropshire, and is helping put the county on the culinary map – making the finals of the prestigious Chef of The Year believe me is some achievement, so we were delighted to be associated with her hard work, dedication and successes to date – supplying her competition plates and sponsoring her chef whites – it really fits our long term marketing strategy and commitment to growth outside the region”

Chef Suree was asked to complete three courses on the day of the competition, including a fish course, pork main, and a dessert – Her selection of a Thai Spicy razor clam, with spicy salad. Followed by Shropshire outdoor reared Pork in Asian Thai broth (Pictured). Mango and passion fruit cheese cake with mango and passion fruit sorbet, and tropical fruit salsa was heavily praised. Of the 18 semi finalists, including Michelin Starred Chefs, seasoned competition Chefs and a World renowned Chef, Chef Suree was just two points off making the final, but was praised for her dedication, professionalism and flair “I was honoured to make the competition, and when I saw who I was competing against I was blown away, but I focused on my dishes, and was delighted with the results and look forward to next year when I can apply my learnings”

Shropshire Pork on the menu – Chef Suree supports local producers and suppliers, including all her meats being sourced from her local butcher, the locally reared Shropshire pork dish (pictured) will be appearing on her menu as one of her daily specials, as will her razor clam o her Friday fish nights, and of course the tempting mango dessert.

The Chef of The Year finals will be held on April 7th and Birmingham’s UCB College.
