Midlands Thai Chef Guest of Honour at House of Lords

Chef Suree Coates of the King and Thai Restaurant Shropshire at The House of Lords

Chef Suree Coates of the King and Thai Restaurant Shropshire at The House of Lords

A Shropshire Chef who was named the UK’s best Thai chef less than 12 months ago has visited the House of Lords to launch a contest to find a worthy successor.

Suree Coates, of The King and Thai, at Broseley, between Ironbridge and Bridgnorth in Shropshire, was invited to London to launch the Thai Chef of the Year 2012/13.
She won the competition in 2011/12 after beating off the challenge of high-flying chefs from star-rated restaurants around the UK.
Today Chef Suree said she hoped she would be in the running for the 2012/13 title, though would have to wait many months to hear.

Suree commented “The competition was launched at the House of Lords this week and it was a great privilege to be invited along as a guest of honour. The nominations for the 2012/13 competition won’t be revealed for some time, though I hope to be able to defend my title. It was great to lift the trophy last year and I hope that I’ll be among the nominees when they are announced this autumn, and we have a lovely evening dining right on the banks of the River Thames overlooking the Millennium Wheel.”

Following last year’s surprise win (but not a surprise to their customers) Suree has not rested on her laurels but improved the customer experience further with newly refurbished interior, relaxing new lounge bar, new table settings, cutlery and crockery, and even more sumptuous desserts. The King and Thai have also featured in a new Cook Book, celebrating 25 of the Midlands finest chefs, and over 75 unique recipes, called Relish Midlands – Available in the restaurant. She said: “Being named the UK’s Best Thai Chef last year, and the industry recognition in January by receiving my Salon Culinaire Bronze Award, really gave me a lot of inspiration to push on and we’ve improved a lot since then. We don’t want to rest on our laurels, the aim for us is to get better and better. I’d love to be in with a shout of winning again in 2012/13.”

Diners travel from far and wide to experience Suree’s fresh approach to Thai cuisine, fusing local ingredients, including prime aged beef and pork sourced from her local butchers, fresh fish hand picked every Friday from Birmingham’s Fish Market – purported to be some of the freshest fish in the UK, and served to perfection every Friday on Suree’s Fish Friday menu – when it’s gone its gone – so book early. Great value – Sensitive to the needs of diners the team have introduced their mid-week early diners menu, where you can enjoy 2 courses £16.50 and 3 courses from Suree’s specially prepared menu for just £19.50, served Tuesday-Thursdays before 7.30pm – not bad for award winning freshly prepared cuisine.
