Boucheron is back with private wine dinners

Wine writer & Food Reviewer Philippe Boucheron

Wine writer & Food Reviewer Philippe Boucheron

80 year-old Wine Writer’s New Business Venture

What do you do when, facing your 80th birthday, the economy strangles a way of earning your living?   Give up and retire? well not Philippe Boucheron.   The doyen of Midland wine and food writers is applying for a licence and plans giving tastings and wine dinners at his Droitwich, Worcestershire, home.

Over the past 20 year he has built up a reputation for putting the fun back into wine at the events he arranged and hosted for hotels and restaurants across the great heart of England. The current recession has effectively killed these off.  Philippe reasoned that over the years he has built up a strong following among Midland gourmets who still want affordable and entertaining ways for experiencing new and different wines, and sharing elegant dinners accompanied by fine wines.

He is simply going to hold them, on a smaller scale, in his conservatory. ‘While hotels and restaurants need around 40 for an event, I am only looking for 14 to 18 for tastings and twelve or 14 for a wine dinner’, explained Philippe. ‘It will be a case of the right crowd and no crowding. Value for money will be the key, with overheads kept down and quality up.’

With his database of some 250 enthusiastic food and wine connoisseurs, and support from Upton Wines, one of the region’s leading suppliers of fine wines to top-rated restaurants, he is well on his way.  The wine dinners – with sparkling receptions and two wines at two or three courses of a four-course meal – will be cooked by award winning chefs like Anthony Morgan of Bromsgrove.  The tastings will also have a glass of fizz before the tutored tasting of six wines – three red and three white – with Philippe’s popular notes, followed by a simple yet sustaining supper.

This octogenarian former marketing and PR man, turned journalist, does not think he is doing anything remarkable.  ‘I am just working for my living’ he says. ‘ I’ve done  it all my life and I don’t plan to stop now, just because it’s getting difficult!’
