Staffordshire-based restaurant group chef has been awarded one of the most sought after culinary awards at a prestigious industry event.

Described as the “Chef Oscars”, Matt Davies, Group Executive Chef of the Lewis Partnership, was awarded the “Louis Cipolla National Chef of the Year Award”, which recognises excellence and achievement.

Nominated by industry peers, Matt was selected above six other finalists, who were all linked with Michelin Star-rated establishments, at the recent British Culinary Federation Awards

Matt, who joined the Lewis Partnership 13 years ago, said “As a chef, this is the award you strive to achieve. I knew I had been nominated which was an honour in itself, but when my name was read out it was a feeling of complete disbelief and utter amazement, I really can’t explain it.

It’s a massive wow factor for my colleagues, friends and family who are all very proud of me. My wife, Tina, who has been incredibly supportive, was there with me on the evening and we were both overwhelmed.

For me it’s an award I’m particularly proud to win because it recognises the hard work you have put into the industry.

When you look at previous winners of this award, such as Glynn Purnell of Michelin-starred Purnell’s restaurant and winner of BBC’s Great British Menu and the likes of Simon Hulstone, chef owner of the Michelin-starred Elephant in Torquay; I’m just completely blown away.

Since winning I have received congratulations from a number of industry figureheads. I can’t thank everyone enough, especially Chris Lewis, it’s all still sinking in.”

Matt, who oversees kitchen’s at all the Lewis Partnership’s venues including The Moat House (Acton Trussell), Swan Hotel and Bear Grill (Stafford) and more recently the Dog and Doublet (Sandon); says this is not only a personal triumph in his career, but one that he wants to use to help raise the profile of the company even further.

He added, “Winning this award is a huge reflection on the Lewis Partnership. Moving forward I hope this recognition will help enhance the award-winning Lewis Partnership brand and raise the business’ profile nationally.

Within the group I run a disciplined kitchen and I have a huge respect for those I work with. They are a very important part of my success and I could not have done this without them.”

After developing a passion for cooking at the age of 15, Matt studied at Solihull College before carving an impressive kitchen career that has included spells at The Savoy in London, tuition from Michelin Star chef Andreas Antonia and television appearances alongside TV presenter chefs, The Hairy Bikers, on BBC Two.

At home in Stafford, Matt now dedicates his time to helping nurture young chefs coming into the industry and hopes this award will help inspire those he teaches.

He said, “I head up a kitchen at Stafford College on a regular basis working alongside third year students to help give them an insight into the industry.

As Chairman of judges for Staffordshire’s ‘Young Chef’ and ‘Master Chef’, it’s great to see some of the dishes the students then go on to produce in competitions such as ‘Taste of Staffordshire’.”

The Lewis Partnership is a leading hospitality company based in Staffordshire. With a business portfolio incorporating award-winning luxury hotels, bars and a deli, their experience in the hospitality industry provides a pool of resources to ensure customers receive the service they require.

Congratulating Matt on his success, Chris Lewis, Managing Partner of The Lewis Partnership, said: “Everyone at the Lewis Partnership is immensely proud of Matt’s recent accolade and would like to congratulate him once again.

Since joining the business 13 years ago as Head Chef, Matt has shown the upmost skill and professionalism in what he does.

We are honoured to have him as part of the team and thrilled his talents and dedication has been recognised on such an influential platform.”
