King & Thai Sharing Platter

King & Thai Sharing Platter

The King and Thai was previously in Ironbridge for over six years where owners Suree and Simon built themselves an excellent reputation for quality authentic Thai cuisine.

They decided to move to larger premises and found The Forester Arms in Broseley and have revamped the former traditional pub into a lovely contemporary restaurant with a hint of Asia, with soft leather sofas, various Thai artefacts and fresh orchids on all the tables.

After ordering our drinks at the bar we were shown through to our table in the restaurant. There are a variety of dishes to choose from with starters, ranging from £3.50 to £6.95. The main courses offer a selection of chicken, pork, beef, fish and vegetarian dishes ranging from £8.50 to £12.75. With so many tempting dishes on offer we decided to try the Thai sharing platter for two which includes 8 dishes of the day including rice at just £10 per person – a great way to experience great Thai food. The sharing platter is available Monday to Thursday and does change regularly so there is always something new to try for the regulars.
While we waited for our order we were given a bowl of light and crunchy prawn crackers served with a warming hot chilli sauce.
Our platter arrived on a tray with all our 8 dishes and rice together and placed in the middle of our table. We soon tucked into the two starter dishes which were Chicken Satay and Spring Rolls. The tender pieces of chicken were on skewers and served with a lovely mild satay sauce. The spring rolls were full of crispy fresh vegetables wrapped in a delicate crispy pancake and served with a sweet chilli dipping sauce.
For the mains we started with the Stir-fried Pork with Vegetables – tender chunks of pork, crunchy beansprouts and a mix of Thai vegetables – fresh and very tasty. Not being a huge fan of prawns I was going to leave the Sweet and Sour Prawn dish for Nik but he persuaded me to give them a try and I was pleasantly surprised, the prawns were very large and meaty not at all fishy as I would have expected – combined with a delicious sweet and sour sauce this was great dish. We moved onto the Chicken Green Curry which was a lovely creamy spicy dish full of flavour, tender strips of chicken with Thai vegetables in a fragrant coconut cream sauce – a slightly warmer dish but in no way overpowering. Lastly we had the Beef Panang which is the only dish that has to be prepared in advance as the beef is very slowly cooked giving it a rich and tasty melt in the mouth texture – a truly wonderful dish, no wonder it’s one of the favourites with the regulars!
During our meal we had a visit from Suree who is not only the owner but also head chef and prides herself on the fresh local produce and quality of food that she uses and is keen to provide customers with a meal to remember, ensuring customers will come back time and time again for that truly Thai experience. Thai cuisine is very healthy (as their ‘Healthy Eating Award’ confirms) as all the food is freshly prepared using only the freshest vegetables and quality cuts of local meat and with the use of fresh herbs and spices also means that the flavours are infused into the meats, giving greater depths of flavour.

King and Thai Cheesecake

King and Thai Cheesecake

To round off our fantastic meal we finished with a couple of homemade desserts – Nik chose the Classic Dark Chocolate Truffle Torte, Nik said “the dark chocolate torte was luxuriously rich and thick”. I had the Strawberry Cheesecake – a thick creamy cheesecake with a lovely biscuit base and topped with fresh strawberries – a perfect finish to a great meal.
All of the meats used are sourced locally where possible with their main meat supplier being Wassell’s in Admaston, the chicken and eggs are RSPCA Freedom Food accredited and is either free range or barn reared. Fish is sourced weekly from Birmingham fish markets, with specials offered daily. The fruit and vegetables are sourced from local suppliers in Telford and all the Thai ingredients including some fruit and vegetables are supplied direct from Thailand, thus ensuring the freshness and authenticity of supply and retaining the delicate flavours enjoyed in true Thai cooking.

Suree and Simon welcome children and offer a children’s menu with a variety of choices to suit all tastes and all healthily cooked.
Many of their customers travel from all over Shropshire, and beyond and it’s easy to see why they return again and again, with such a great atmosphere and first class cuisine it truly is a Thai experience you will remember!

Total food bill for this 3-course review: £29.90 (Gourmet Life Dining Discount -20% = £23.92 – see www.gourmet-life.co.uk for more details)
